The U.S. Senate is expected to vote soon on a bipartisan bill aimed at imposing strong sanctions related to trade with Russia. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has expressed that “the time has come” to move forward with this legislation, which has overwhelming support from senators, including its sponsor, Republican Lindsey Graham. The bill includes imposing tariffs of up to 500% on imports from countries that buy Russian oil, gas, or uranium and do not actively support Ukraine.

It also gives the U.S. President Donald Trump the authority to adjust tariffs or grant exemptions for national security reasons. The sanctions target Russia’s war economy by pressuring countries like China, India, and Brazil that continue trading with Russia.

The bill also mandates visa and property-blocking sanctions on certain Russian officials and entities, aiming to escalate economic pressure to end the war in Ukraine. The vote timing is being coordinated with the White House to ensure presidential support before proceeding.
