Russia has officially launched its new Khabarovsk nuclear-powered submarine on November 2, at the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk.

This submarine is the lead vessel of the Project 08951 class and is designed primarily to carry Poseidon nuclear-powered, nuclear-armed torpedoes, which are strategic, long-range “doomsday” weapons with underwater intercontinental capabilities.

The Khabarovsk is described as a “nuclear-powered missile cruiser” by the Russian Ministry of Defense but is not equipped with ballistic missiles like typical SSBNs. Instead, it carries Poseidon torpedoes along with land-attack and anti-ship cruise missiles, standard torpedoes, and unspecified robotic weapon systems.

The submarine was developed by the Rubin Central Design Bureau of Marine Engineering and is equipped with modern weapons, including robotic systems. It is capable of effectively protecting Russia’s maritime borders and ensuring the security of its interests in the world’s oceans.

The launch ceremony was attended by Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov and Navy Commander Admiral Aleksandr Moiseev, who emphasized the submarine’s role in strengthening Russia’s maritime defense and protecting national interests globally. The Khabarovsk will undergo a series of sea trials before entering active service. It is the second submarine capable of deploying Poseidon torpedoes, after the Belgorod, which entered service in 2022.

This launch highlights Russia’s ongoing focus on novel strategic weapon systems and expanding its nuclear and robotic underwater capabilities.
