The Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China temporarily lifted the ban on the export of gallium, antimony and germanium to the United States. The decision came into force on November 9 and will be valid until November 27, 2026.

The decision was preceded by a meeting between the leaders of China and the United States on October 30 in South Korea, where they agreed to resolve some issues of the trade conflict and lift a number of mutual bans and sanctions.

Along with this, the Chinese authorities have simplified inspections of graphite exports to the United States, as well as temporarily lifted additional restrictions imposed in October on the export of certain rare earth metals and raw materials for lithium batteries.

China imposed a ban on the export of gallium, germanium and antimony, which are necessary for the production of semiconductors, to the United States in December 2024.

This step was a response to the restrictions imposed by the United States on the export of semiconductors to China, which the United States justified by the desire to limit China’s access to technologies used in semiconductors, AI and the military industry.

According to the British research center Critical Minerals Intelligence Centre, China accounts for 94% of the world’s gallium production.

In July 2023, China restricted the exports of gallium and germanium amid tensions with the U.S.
