Thailand has recently tightened its visa rules for foreigners, particularly targeting abuses related to tourist visas and visa-exempt entries.
Foreign tourists can now only extend their visas twice: the first extension lasts 30 days, and the second extension just 7 days. This limits the total stay for visitors from 93 countries from previously 120 days to now a maximum of 97 days. For those who originally had 30-day visas, the maximum stay is now capped at 67 days.
The practice of “visa runs” (leaving and re-entering Thailand within few days to reset visa or stay periods) has been severely restricted. Same-day departures and re-entries are prohibited, and individuals attempting visa runs more than twice risk entry denial.
Officials have intensified screening of foreigners who repeatedly enter Thailand under visa exemption without valid reasons, targeting those potentially involved in illegal work, cybercrime, human trafficking, and other illicit activities.
Foreigners with records of deportation or linked to scam networks, especially near border areas, may be banned from reentry.
The crackdown aims to prevent misuse of tourist visas for prolonged stays and illegal activities, while most regular tourists with standard travel plans and confirmed return tickets remain unaffected.

Since the beginning of 2025, thai officials have already refused entry to roughly 2,900 individuals found abusing visa privileges.
These measures reflect a broader governmental effort to enhance border security, regulate foreign presence, and prevent repeated visa abuses, aligning with policies directed by the Prime Minister and Police Commissioner General. Violators of the new visa rules face strict consequences, including refusal of entry and deportation.
