The United States deployed up to four B-2A Spirit stealth bombers to conduct precision strikes on targets in Iran on Saturday night, according to the Military Air Tracking Alliance (MATA), an aviation monitoring resource.
The operation showcased the extraordinary global reach of U.S. strategic airpower. The bombers reportedly flew non-stop missions from Whiteman Air Force Base, supported by aerial refueling from U.S. tanker aircraft. These round-trip sorties lasted approximately 37 to 38 hours, underlining the endurance and operational flexibility of the B-2 fleet.
According to the US Central Command in the Middle East (CENTCOM), B-2A Spirit heavy bombers have been repeatedly used since the beginning of the military operation to deliver powerful strikes against Iran’s most important underground facilities.
The B-2A Spirit is the only aircraft in the US strategic aviation that is capable of delivering the most powerful non-nuclear bombs in the American arsenal Massive Ordnance Penetrator weighing 13.6 tons. The latter were used in June last year to destroy underground Iranian nuclear facilities. Each bomber can carry only two such bombs.
In addition, on Saturday, two US Air Force B-1B Lancer strategic bombers returned to Fairford Air Base in the UK after completing combat missions in the skies over Iran. B-1B aircraft are capable of carrying 24 glide 900-kilogram JDAM bombs with a range of up to 20 km.
Currently, a group of 21 American heavy bombers is based at Fairford Air Force Base in England, including 15 B-1B Lancers and six B-52H Stratofortresses.
The ongoing major war in the Middle East, involving the US, Israel, and Iran, started on February 28, 2026. This conflict began with surprise US-Israeli airstrikes on Iranian sites, killing Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and targeting military infrastructure, command centers, and nuclear-related facilities. Iran retaliated with missile and drone attacks on Israel, US bases in Gulf states like Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, UAE, and Saudi Arabia, as well as allied targets.
