The U.S. is reportedly preparing to send a third aircraft carrier, the USS George H.W. Bush, to the Middle East, where it would join the USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Gerald R. Ford already in the region.

Media reports say the Bush has finished pre-deployment training and is expected to head toward the eastern Mediterranean as part of an expanded U.S. naval presence amid war with Iran. One report says the carrier could take about 10 to 12 days to reach the theater.

If confirmed, this would give the U.S. three carrier strike groups in or near the Middle East at the same time, a notable buildup intended to sustain strike tempo and regional deterrence.

The USS George H.W. Bush is the tenth and final Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, commissioned in 2009.

The USS George H.W. Bush is a nuclear-powered Nimitz-class carrier, and reports note it carries roughly 80 aircraft, including F/A-18 Super Hornets and EA-18G Growlers.
