Russia will take tough measures in response to EU sanctions in connection with the recognition of the independence of the republic of Donetsk and Luhansk, stated the Russian Foreign Ministry on February 24.
“The next unfriendly steps of the EU against Russia, as well as our fraternal DNR and LNR, will not be able to stop the progressive development of our states and the provision of assistance to them. In accordance with the principle of reciprocity, which is basic for international law, we will take tough retaliatory measures“, stressed the diplomatic institution.
The ministry criticized the EU’s decision on sanctions against Russia, saying that “instead of analyzing the situation in the European Union, they resorted to sanctions tools.” Also, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that the EU has no legal competence to solve the problems of war and peace in Europe.
“Our repeated signals to Kiev and its Western curators about the need to stop the violence in the Donbass, to implement the Minsk package of measures, were not heard. For them, the population of the DNR and LNR is just a bargaining chip. Even after Russia recognized the independence of these republics, shelling not only did not stop, but also intensified“, reported the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday morning at 04:00 AM said that in response to the appeal of the leaders of the republics of Donbass, he decided to conduct a special military operation in Ukraine. The Russian leader stressed that Moscow’s plans do not include the occupation of Ukrainian territories.
The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that the Russian military does not strike at the cities of Ukraine and that military infrastructure is disabled by high-precision means. Nothing threatens the civilian population, according to Russian officials. Throughout the day, casualties have been reported amid Ukrainian soldiers after battles with separatists troops. Numerous explosions have been heard in the Kiev suburbs. Thousands of Ukrainians have taken roads to flee to West.
Amid the sanctions that Russia could take in response to the European Union, is the halt of exports of rare minerals, reduction of oil and gas exports, the ban on European products and services imports, the end of space cooperation or the withdrawal of treaties signed between Russia and EU Member States.
