The People’s Liberation Army of China started on April 8 military drills around the island of Taiwan, announced an official of the Chinese Army, Colonel Shi Yi. The drills are expected to end on April 10.

The Chinese Army said it organizes patrols around Taiwan in the frame of the “Joint Sword” drill in the Taiwan Strait, as well as in the sea and airspace in the areas north, south and east of Taiwan.

Nine ships of the Chinese Navy were placed near Taiwan, as well as more than 70 combat aircraft.

Earlier, the Chinese Foreign Ministry warned that Beijing would take measures in response to the meeting in California of the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the US Congress, Kevin McCarthy, with the head of the Taiwanese administration, Tsai Ing-wen, who was in the United States in transit “despite repeated negotiations and strong opposition from China.”

In response to the serious illegal actions of the United States and Taiwan, China will take decisive and vigorous measures to protect national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, stressing that the Taiwan issue is “the core of China’s core interests and an insurmountable red line in Sino-American relations.”

A delegation of the US Congress led by the Representative Michael McCaul, head of the Foreign Affairs Committee, arrived in Taiwan on April 6 reported NBC News.
