Gabriel ATTAL has submitted the Government’s resignation to the President of the Republic, who accepted it today, the Elysée Palace announced in a press release. Gabriel ATTAL, together with the members of the Government, is responsible for the handling of current affairs until the appointment of a new Government.
This resignation was accepted by President Emmanuel Macron, marking the beginning of a transition period in French governance.
The French presidency issued the following comment: “In order for this period to end as quickly as possible, it is up to the republican forces to work together to build a rally around projects and actions in the service of the French people.”
Despite their resignation, Attal and his ministers will remain in office in a caretaker capacity until a new government is formed. This arrangement ensures the continuity of state functions and essential day-to-day operations of the administration.

The caretaker government has limited powers compared to a fully-fledged government. While they can manage routine affairs, their ability to make significant policy decisions or introduce new legislation is restricted.
This situation has arisen due to the lack of a clear majority in the Assemblée Nationale following recent parliamentary elections. The transition period allows for negotiations and potential compromises among political forces to form a new government.
On June 9, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the dissolution of the lower house of parliament – the National Assembly – and called early parliamentary elections due to the heavy defeat in the European Parliament elections of the social-liberal presidential party “Renaissance”, which lost significantly to the nationalist right-wing “National Rally”.
In the early parliamentary elections of 30 June and 7 July, the pro-presidential coalition lost to the New Popular Front, a bloc of left-wing parties, and the National Rally. No political force has won an absolute parliamentary majority, but the left can claim to form a minority government.
On July 18, the French National Assembly will hold elections to choose the chairman. In part, it will also be the election of the prime minister, since it will become clear what real power different groups, winners and losers, have in parliament. It is quite possible that this does not always coincide with the results of the elections. And then the new appointee will have to form a coalition government, trade will go to each of the ministerial portfolios.
