Chinese President Xi Jinping will make an official visit to Russia from May 7 to 10, attending the 80th anniversary celebrations of the Allied victory over Nazi Germany during the World War II (1939-1945). During the visit, Xi will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss enhancing their comprehensive strategic partnership and sign several bilateral agreements.

This visit marks Xi’s third trip to Russia since the conflict in Ukraine began on February 24, 2022. The visit also coincides with Russia’s Victory Day on May 9, with Vladimir Putin proposing a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine during the celebrations, which Ukraine has rejected.

China maintains a neutral stance on the conflict but supports Russia’s claims that the West provoked the situation and continues to supply key components for Russian defence industry.

China and Russia are two nuclear powers, which grew closer in the 2000s, sharing a common opposition to the influence of the United States and its allies on the international stage. Both countries are founding members of the BRICS and members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
