U.S. stock index futures are advancing on Wednesday morning as Wall Street seeks to extend its renewed optimism in the wake of a powerful market rally.

Dow (INDU) futures gained 0.29%, S&P 500 (SPX) 0.37%, and Nasdaq (US100:IND) 0.02%.

SpaceX and AMD, both of which reported earnings after the close yesterday. Elon Musk’s rocket company beat Wall Street expectations but disclosed huge AI investments that rattled investors. Its shares dived more than 10% premarket.

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is down 8.82%, DaVita (DVA) is down 6.57%, EchoStar (ECHO) is down 3.49%, Intel (INTC) is down 3.18% and Verizon Communications (VZ) is down 2.99%.

U.S. private sector employment rose by 44,000 in July, below the consensus of 75,000 and slowing from the 98,000 jobs announced in June, according to data released Wednesday by ADP.

The yield on 2-year U.S. Treasuries (US2Y) rose 0.2 basis points to 4.21%, the benchmark 10-year yield (US10Y) fell 0.6 basis points to 4.61%, and the 30-year yield (US30Y) fell 1.4 basis points to 5.16%.

US mortgage rates rose last week to the highest level in a year, curbing demand for home loans in an already subdued housing market.

The contract rate on a 30-year mortgage rose 5 basis points to 6.81% in the week ended July 31, according to Mortgage Bankers Association data released Wednesday.

Oil futures edge up as the market waits to see if an agreement is reached to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude reversed early losses, gaining 1.4% to $80.45 per barrel early Aug. 5.

On Aug. 4, it sank 5.3% as hopes rose for progress toward a full peace agreement between the U.S. and Iran.

Rates fell to their lowest levels since 2022 toward the end of February, just before the start of the Iran war. Since then, they’ve trended higher as the conflict pushed up energy prices and stoked inflation concerns.

European markets

European stock markets were mostly higher on August 5, with the major indexes opening up in early trading: France’s CAC 40 +0.16%, Germany’s DAX +0.65%, Italy’s Milan market +0.59%, Spain’s Madrid market +0.63%, Amsterdam +0.31%, Stockholm +0.60%, and the UK’s FTSE 100 +0.40%.

Gold and silver prices

Spot gold was at $4,081.09 per ounce and spot silver at $61.49 per ounce in early morning trading on August 5.

Gold is now trading at $4,195.90 per ounce, up $119.10 or 2.92% on the day. The price sits near the upper end of its intraday range, with the day’s low at $4,064.80 and high at $4,214.20. That strength suggests strong safe-haven demand and continued bullish momentum in the gold market.

The post-Fed setup has shifted from rate fear to data watch. The Federal Reserve held the target range for the federal funds rate at 3.50% to 3.75% on July 29 in a 9-3 vote.
