The Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi met with the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who is in Italy for an official working visit on August 26-27.

Draghi and Lavrov discussed at Palazzo Chigi the latest developments in Afghanistan, underlining the priority objectives of ensuring stabilization and security in the country and on a regional scale, to deal with the ongoing humanitarian emergency and to watch over respect for human rights, especially for women. Both parties also talked about the role of the international organisations, including the G20, in the prospects for resolving the current crisis in Afghanistan.

Italy, as part of the G20 presidency, is planning an ad hoc summit on Afghanistan, as was announced by Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio in the press conference at the end of the interview with his Russian colleague Lavrov, adding that he is counting on “cooperation” of Russia.

There was also talks on the situation in Libya and in particular on the need to continue the political dialogue promoted in Geneva by the United Nations with the perspective of elections at the end of December 2021.
