The U.S. President Donald Trump said the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire has been extended by three weeks after talks at the White House, and that the United States will work with Lebanon to help it defend itself against Hezbollah.
Trump announced the extension in a Truth Social post and described the meeting as going well. The original ceasefire was a 10-day arrangement that began on April 16, and reports said both sides had already violated it before the extension.
The extension suggests Washington is trying to keep a fragile truce alive while broader regional tensions remain high. Reporting also said the deal came after a second round of ambassador-level talks hosted at the White House.
The USS George H.W. Bush arrived in the Indian Ocean after traveling around the southern tip of Africa to reach the Middle East, giving President Trump additional warships to enforce his blockade of Iranian ports and more firepower should he decide to resume strikes on Iran.
U.S. forces said they had intercepted two more Iran-linked vessels in the Indian Ocean, boarding one and escorting the other, as part of efforts to enforce their naval blockade. On Wednesday, Iran attacked three ships in the Strait of Hormuz and escorted two of them to Iranian waters.
Pope Leo XIV urged the United States and Iran to return to talks to end the war.
