Argentina and China have extended their approximately US$19 billion currency-swap agreement for five years, giving Buenos Aires continued access to a critical source of financial support as it seeks to stabilize its economy and rebuild foreign-exchange reserves.
Argentina’s central bank announced the renewal on Wednesday, saying the longer term would provide “greater predictability regarding the continuity of this tool.” The agreement has been in effect since 2009 and was previously renewed in three-year increments. Its extension underscores the importance of China’s financial relationship with Argentina amid persistent economic pressure, limited dollar liquidity and the country’s need to support international trade.
Under the arrangement, Argentina can access Chinese yuan to facilitate trade and strengthen its financial position. A US$5.17 billion tranche activated in 2023 will remain in effect, according to the central bank. The facility is designed to bolster financial stability while supporting trade and investment between the two countries.
The renewed agreement offers Argentina additional policy flexibility at a time when the government is working to improve its fiscal and monetary position. Although a currency swap does not necessarily represent an immediate injection of new funds or a permanent increase in usable foreign-exchange reserves, it can provide an important liquidity backstop during periods of market stress.
For China, the deal reinforces the yuan’s role in international transactions and deepens its economic ties with one of Latin America’s largest economies. It also preserves a channel for bilateral trade and investment, particularly as Argentina seeks to diversify its sources of financing and reduce pressure on its dollar reserves.

The five-year renewal therefore carries both practical and diplomatic significance for Buenos Aires and Beijing.
China has agreed on this currency-swap deal for another five years as the World Bank sees Argentina’s economy growing 3.6% this year. The country’s economy grew 4.4% in 2025. The World Bank said this would put Argentina on track for three consecutive years of growth for the first time since 2008.
