European stock markets recovered on Monday, October 26, as upbeat corporate updates, easing oil prices and relief over France’s unchanged credit rating helped restore risk appetite. The pan-European STOXX 600 closed 0.77% higher at 640.66, reversing part of the previous week’s decline ahead of important central-bank decisions.
The advance gathered strength after a subdued opening. Investors initially remained cautious about French political unrest and elevated energy costs, but gains in defence, travel and selected technology companies eventually lifted the broader market. Energy shares lagged as crude prices retreated.
European Stock Market Performance
Germany’s benchmark rose approximately 0.9%, according to Reuters’ closing report. France’s CAC 40 finished at 7,847.32, up 0.83%, while London’s FTSE 100 also closed higher after trading slightly lower earlier in the session.
| Market or sector | October 26 performance |
|---|---|
| STOXX 600 | +0.77% to 640.66 |
| Germany’s benchmark index | Approximately +0.9% |
| France’s CAC 40 | +0.83% to 7,847.32 |
| European defence shares | +2.6% |
| Travel and leisure shares | +1.9% |
| European energy shares | -0.2% |
These closing figures differ from morning reports showing the STOXX 600 essentially flat. At 08:09 GMT, the index stood around 636.26, illustrating how sentiment improved as trading progressed.
The distinction matters because the session was not a uniformly strong rally from the opening bell. Buyers became more confident as corporate news and lower energy prices provided support.
Defence and Travel Stocks Lead the Recovery
Defence shares led Europe’s sector gains, rising 2.6%, while travel and leisure advanced 1.9%. Most major STOXX 600 sectors finished higher, suggesting the rebound extended beyond a small group of technology companies.
British technology-services provider Computacenter and Danish biotechnology company Genmab were among the stocks supporting the benchmark. Their performance helped investors look beyond broader geopolitical uncertainty and focus on company-specific developments.
Investors also examined Anthropic’s newly public U.S. IPO documents. The filing added another major development to the AI investment debate, although Europe’s recovery was broader than a straightforward technology-led rally.
France Receives Relief After Moody’s Decision
French assets benefited after Moody’s refrained from downgrading the country’s sovereign rating late Friday. The decision offered relief following a period of concern about public finances, political instability and unrest.
French 10-year government-bond yields fell below 5%, trading around 4.973% in reported intraday dealings. Lower yields indicated improved demand for the debt, but did not eliminate concerns about France’s longer-term fiscal position.
For equities, the reprieve reduced an immediate source of uncertainty. It should not be interpreted as confirmation that budget negotiations or social tensions have been resolved.
Lower Oil Prices Help—but Hurt Energy Stocks
Crude prices declined as investors assessed diplomatic efforts to reduce Middle East tensions. Earlier reporting placed the drop near 1%, following last week’s sharp advance driven by attacks affecting Saudi infrastructure and transport.

Cheaper oil offered breathing room for Europe’s energy-importing economies and contributed to improved sentiment. However, it also weighed on listed producers: the regional energy index finished 0.2% lower.
Galp Falls After Merger Talks Collapse
Portugal’s Galp Energia dropped 10.8% after talks with Spain’s Moeve to combine refining, chemicals and fuel-retail operations collapsed. It was among the STOXX 600’s weakest performers and recorded its largest daily decline since December.
The move demonstrated that company-specific setbacks could overwhelm the improving regional backdrop.
What Investors Should Watch Next
Central-bank decisions and further earnings reports now become the principal tests. Monday’s rebound showed renewed confidence, but investors still need evidence that companies can preserve profitability despite expensive energy and uncertain financing conditions.

The strongest signal was broader participation; the limitation was that one positive session recovered only part of the previous week’s losses. Sustaining the advance requires supportive earnings and a manageable policy outlook.
