The Moldovan state-owned company Energocom will purchase in September-October the missing electricity for the republic abroad without holding a tender, but through direct negotiations with suppliers.
This decision was made by the national commission of Moldova for emergency situations, taking into account the continuing state of emergency in the country. On August 11, Moldova and Romania already signed a contract over commercial electricity flows.
The Commission granted such powers to the company Energocom from May 2022. The company signed its last supply contract at the end of June. This contract provides that 70 percent of Moldova’s missing electricity in July-August is supplied by the Moldavian State District Power Plant, owned by the Russian corporation Inter RAO at a price of $ 59.9 / MWh. The 30 percent remaining is supplied by the Ukrainian state company AtomEnergo at $ 77 / MWh.
The Moldovan government explains the need to purchase more expensive Ukrainian electricity “by the fear of dependence on one supplier located in the uncontrolled Transnistrian region.”
Moldova provides only 20-25% of its electricity needs at the expense of its own generating capacities.
On August 11, the Romanian electricity public company, Transelectrica and Moldovan state-owned company Moldelectrica signed a contract that provides for commercial electricity flows between the two countries.
In March, the power supply system of Moldova was synchronized with the European one. Test connections to Romanian networks occurred on March 17. Romania exported energy to Moldova with a power capacity of 375.3 MW.
The spot price of gas in Europe crossed $ 3,300 per 1 thousand cubic meters on August 25.
Between October 2021 and August 2022, gas prices in Europe grew by 231%.
