House of the Dragon is a Game of Thrones prequel set about 200 years earlier, centered on House Targaryen at the height of its power and the succession crisis that turns into a civil war. The story follows King Viserys I, his chosen heir Rhaenyra Targaryen, and the rival claim of Aegon II after Viserys’s death, leading to the conflict known as the Dance of the Dragons.

The series explores the Targaryens as the dominant royal house in Westeros, with dragons giving them immense military power. The main tension comes from internal family rivalry, political betrayal, and competing claims to the Iron Throne.
