The 18th BRICS Summit will be held in New Delhi on September 12–13, 2026, with India hosting the group under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s chairmanship. The meeting is expected to bring together leaders from the expanded BRICS membership and place economic cooperation, strategic autonomy and the evolving architecture of global governance at the center of international attention.wikipedia+1

India has announced the 2026 theme as “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability.” The agenda is expected to cover trade, investment, energy security, technology, development finance and cooperation among emerging economies. Ministerial and working-group meetings have already begun, providing the groundwork for agreements and recommendations to be considered by national leaders in September.

The summit will take place as BRICS continues to evolve from its original grouping of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The bloc now includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, although participation and attendance arrangements may vary between individual events. Bangladesh has also been invited as a special guest, highlighting the wider network of partner countries surrounding the organization.

From a financial perspective, the New Delhi summit could renew discussions about local-currency settlement, development lending and mechanisms designed to reduce dependence on the U.S. dollar. Jouvenet’s analysis of BRICS and G7 growth prospects provides useful context for assessing the bloc’s economic scale relative to advanced-economy groupings.

The summit’s significance will ultimately depend on whether members can move beyond declarations and deliver measurable initiatives. For India, the event offers an opportunity to present New Delhi as a bridge between emerging economies and major global powers. For BRICS, it will be a test of whether a diverse and expanding coalition can build durable institutions, coordinate policy and project a credible alternative voice in world affairs.

In January 2024, Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia joined the organization. It was expected that from January 1, 2024, Saudi Arabia would also join the BRICS, but it took a pause in the accession process. Last December Thailand has accepted Russia’s invitation to become a BRICS partner country. Invitations to become partner countries were sent to 13 countries. This category was approved at the BRICS summit in Kazan held in October 2024.
