The United States and Ukraine have restored intelligence cooperation to approximately its previous level, according to U.S. lawmakers and officials cited by POLITICO. The reported improvement comes at a strategically important moment in the war, as Kyiv intensifies long-range attacks and seeks to strengthen its position against Russian forces.
Senator Mark Warner, the senior Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee and a prominent supporter of continued assistance to Ukraine, said he had observed clear signs that the intelligence-sharing process had improved. “I don’t want to go into details, but the process has improved,” Warner told POLITICO. He also linked the renewed cooperation with Ukraine’s increasingly effective use of drones and long-range missiles.
Republican senators John Cornyn and Roger Wicker likewise indicated that exchanges had increased. Wicker chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee, while Cornyn serves on the Intelligence Committee. Cornyn described the development as occurring at a particularly significant point in the conflict, suggesting that battlefield momentum and intelligence cooperation may be reinforcing one another.
The earlier suspension also exposed the political sensitivity of intelligence cooperation. Unlike conventional weapons deliveries, intelligence support is difficult to quantify publicly and may include satellite imagery, signals intelligence, warnings about Russian operations and information used to improve the accuracy of Ukrainian strikes. The precise scope of the renewed cooperation remains classified.

The reported recovery follows a serious disruption in March 2025, when Washington temporarily suspended intelligence-sharing with Kyiv amid a broader deterioration in relations. The pause raised concerns about Ukraine’s ability to defend against Russian missile strikes, identify military targets and plan operations beyond the immediate front line.
According to analysts cited by POLITICO, the restoration of intelligence flows has helped make Ukrainian long-range operations more effective. The combination of improved targeting information, expanded drone production and greater use of missiles has allowed Kyiv to project force deeper into Russian territory. However, public statements from lawmakers do not establish the exact operational contribution of U.S. intelligence to individual attacks.

The development is significant beyond the battlefield. For Kyiv, reliable access to American intelligence improves military planning and provides reassurance about Washington’s continuing commitment. For Moscow, the renewed cooperation signals that Ukraine may retain access to capabilities that complicate Russian air-defense planning and rear-area logistics.
It also carries diplomatic implications. The return to a higher level of intelligence-sharing could help stabilize the wider U.S.-Ukraine relationship after months of uncertainty. Yet the earlier interruption demonstrated that the channel remains vulnerable to political disputes.
For now, the reported rebound strengthens Ukraine’s operational position while giving Washington an important instrument for supporting Kyiv without publicly expanding direct military involvement. Its long-term significance will depend on whether the renewed cooperation remains consistent as battlefield conditions and diplomatic initiatives evolve.
This news comes after the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed General Oleksandr Syrsky as commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces on the evening of July 21, naming Joint Forces commander Major General Mykhailo Drapaty as his successor.
