AEVEX is set to acquire BlackSea Technologies in a move that could expand the US defense technology company’s presence in autonomous maritime systems, unmanned operations and naval mission support. The planned acquisition would combine AEVEX’s expertise in uncrewed aircraft, autonomy, navigation and mission integration with BlackSea Technologies’ portfolio of unmanned surface vessels, maritime logistics and defense solutions.
Under the terms of the agreement, AEVEX will acquire BlackSea for up to $650 million on a cash‑free, debt‑free basis, consisting of approximately $250 million in cash and approximately $350 million in shares of Class A common stock of AEVEX priced at $27.50/share (approximately 12.7M shares).
The transaction reflects growing demand for autonomous systems that can operate across air, land and sea domains. As defense forces seek lower-cost, scalable and more survivable capabilities, the integration of airborne and maritime autonomy is becoming strategically important.
AEVEX Expands Defense Technology Portfolio
AEVEX is a defense technology and mission-solutions company focused on next-generation navigation, autonomy, uncrewed systems and adaptable capabilities for military and government customers. Its work includes special-mission aircraft integration, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance systems, counter-unmanned aircraft solutions, navigation technologies and additive manufacturing.
The acquisition of BlackSea Technologies would give AEVEX a stronger maritime technology base. Rather than concentrating solely on airborne platforms, the combined organisation could offer customers a broader portfolio that links autonomous aircraft, surface vessels, sensors, communications systems and mission-management tools.
This type of multi-domain capability is increasingly relevant to US and allied defense forces. Modern operations require persistent surveillance, distributed sensing, rapid logistics and secure communications across contested environments. Unmanned vessels can work alongside aerial drones to extend situational awareness and reduce the need to place personnel in high-risk areas.
BlackSea Technologies and Maritime Autonomy
BlackSea Technologies develops maritime defense and mission solutions, including unmanned surface vessels, autonomous reconnaissance craft, expeditionary logistics systems and support for uncrewed operations. Its Mission Solutions team provides systems and services designed to enable unmanned missions, ranging from mothership support and logistics to training and operational integration.
The company has demonstrated its Global Autonomous Reconnaissance Craft, or GARC, in operational settings. In February 2026, BlackSea participated in NATO Arctic Sentry exercises in Norway, where its autonomous vessel operated with US and allied naval forces in a demanding high-latitude environment.
Such demonstrations are important because they move autonomous maritime systems beyond laboratory trials. For naval users, a vessel must operate reliably in harsh weather, integrate with crewed ships, communicate securely and maintain mission effectiveness in contested or remote waters.
BlackSea has also developed the Comet unmanned surface vessel and supported maritime defense applications involving surveillance, logistics and operational support.
Strategic Value of the Acquisition
The AEVEX-BlackSea Technologies acquisition could create a more integrated supplier for defense customers seeking autonomy across multiple domains. AEVEX brings capabilities in uncrewed aerial systems, mission integration and navigation, while BlackSea contributes maritime platforms and experience in autonomous sea-based operations.
The strategic value lies in the potential to connect those systems. For example, unmanned aircraft could provide long-range intelligence and targeting information to autonomous surface vessels. In return, unmanned vessels could serve as persistent sensor nodes, communications relays, logistics platforms or launch-and-recovery assets for aerial drones.
This approach supports the broader military concept of distributed operations. Rather than depending entirely on a small number of high-value crewed platforms, forces can deploy numerous lower-cost autonomous systems across a wider operating area.
Navy Contracts and Industrial Potential
BlackSea Technologies has recently secured significant US Navy work. In July 2026, the company was awarded a five-year contract valued at up to $256 million to build and support the Seabased Petroleum Distribution System, which is designed to improve fuel logistics for maritime operations.

The contract underlines that BlackSea’s business extends beyond experimental drones. Maritime fuel distribution, logistics and sustainment remain central challenges for naval forces operating far from established ports and supply hubs.
Combining BlackSea’s maritime logistics expertise with AEVEX’s engineering and autonomy capabilities could strengthen the group’s ability to compete for future contracts involving unmanned vessels, expeditionary support and distributed naval operations.
Outlook for Autonomous Maritime Systems
Demand for maritime drones and autonomous vessels is expected to grow as navies respond to rising geopolitical tensions, risks to sea lanes and the need for persistent surveillance. The Black Sea, Arctic, Indo-Pacific and Middle East are all regions where low-cost, networked and remotely operated maritime platforms could become increasingly important.
The acquisition positions AEVEX to participate in that shift. If successfully integrated, BlackSea Technologies could provide AEVEX with a meaningful maritime platform alongside its existing air and mission-systems capabilities—creating a more comprehensive autonomous defense technology company.
