The United States is preparing to send the aircraft carrier USS George Washington to the Middle East to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln after an extended deployment of more than 250 days. The rotation is intended to maintain US naval power in the region while providing relief to the Lincoln’s crew after months of operations linked to the Iran conflict.
The deployment underscores the operational strain placed on the US Navy by the continuing Iran war, maritime-security missions and the enforcement of restrictions on Iranian ports and shipping.
USS Abraham Lincoln Faces Extended Deployment
The USS Abraham Lincoln began its scheduled deployment in November 2025 before being redirected to the Middle East in January 2026, ahead of the escalation of the US conflict with Iran. Since then, the carrier and its strike group have taken part in Operation Epic Fury, the US bombing campaign against Iranian targets, and have supported the blockade of Iranian ports.
The carrier has now been deployed for more than 250 days and reportedly spent about 200 consecutive days without a port call. Senator Richard Blumenthal said this was a record stretch at sea and raised concerns over crew welfare, readiness and the long-term sustainability of the deployment.
Reports from family members described shortages of some basic supplies, limited rest opportunities and concerns about the psychological impact of sustained operations. The US Navy has acknowledged that the lengthy deployment is challenging, while saying the Lincoln remains capable of meeting all assigned mission requirements.
USS George Washington to Take Over
The USS George Washington is expected to deploy to the Arabian Sea as part of a planned rotation. US officials said the move had been scheduled before the recent congressional concerns over conditions aboard the Lincoln became public.
A carrier rotation allows the Pentagon to preserve a continuous aircraft-carrier presence without leaving the same crew and equipment deployed indefinitely. Aircraft carriers provide combat aircraft, surveillance capabilities, command-and-control infrastructure and rapid strike capacity, making them central to US military operations in the Middle East.
The George Washington’s arrival would enable the Abraham Lincoln to leave the region, conduct maintenance and allow sailors to return home after the exceptionally long deployment.
Middle East Security Implications
The carrier replacement occurs as the United States continues operations connected to the Iran war. US forces are enforcing a blockade of Iranian ports and coastal cities, with more than 20 Navy vessels reportedly involved in the wider mission.
The continued deployment of a carrier strike group serves several objectives: maintaining pressure on Iran, protecting commercial shipping routes, supporting allied forces and deterring attacks against US personnel and regional partners.
However, the operation also illustrates the limits of carrier availability. Aircraft carriers require extensive maintenance periods, training cycles and crew recovery. Prolonged deployments can affect equipment readiness and retention, particularly when sailors face months without substantial shore leave.
US Navy Readiness Under Pressure
The USS George Washington’s mission will test the Navy’s ability to sustain a high operational tempo across multiple regions. The United States must balance commitments in the Middle East with strategic requirements in the Indo-Pacific, Europe and other maritime theatres.

The rotation is designed to demonstrate that Washington can maintain military pressure on Iran while managing force exhaustion. Yet the length of the Abraham Lincoln deployment shows how rapidly a regional conflict can consume naval resources.
For now, the George Washington’s deployment is a signal of continuity rather than escalation: the United States is replacing an overstretched carrier while preserving its ability to project air and naval power across the Middle East.
