Brazilian authorities cancelled Senator Flávio Bolsonaro’s passports on Tuesday, October 27, after he failed to surrender them under a Supreme Court order, following the unexpected election of the socialist candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The defeated presidential candidate was barred from leaving Brazil amid investigations into alleged financial crimes, which he denies. Conflicting reports about his movements have intensified uncertainty over whether he remains in the country. Some say he would have crossed the ground border with Argentina to flee.
Bolsonaro lost Sunday’s presidential runoff to incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The travel restrictions followed that defeat, but form part of judicial proceedings rather than an automatic consequence of losing an election.
Why Were Bolsonaro’s Passports Cancelled?
Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered Bolsonaro to hand over his travel documents within 24 hours as part of an alleged money-laundering investigation. After the deadline passed, authorities cancelled the documents, according to police sources cited by Reuters and BBC reporting.
The surrender requirement covered his ordinary and diplomatic passports, along with any foreign passports he might hold. Flávio Bolsonaro described the measure as politically motivated and questioned its timing immediately after the election of the socialist candidate Lula da Silva.
Passport cancellation is a procedural restriction, not a criminal conviction. The investigations remain allegations, and Bolsonaro denies wrongdoing.
Flávio Bolsonaro is under investigation over alleged links to Brazilian lawyer Willer Tomaz, who is accused of laundering more than $1 billion through a fraud scheme, according to court documents reviewed by The New York Times. Both men deny wrongdoing. The amount concerns the alleged scheme associated with Tomaz; it should not be described as money Bolsonaro personally laundered.
Did Flávio Bolsonaro Cross Into Argentina?
His location remained disputed in Tuesday’s reporting. Argentine outlet Infobae reported that Bolsonaro had travelled through Argentina, prompting speculation that he intended to continue to the United States. However, Argentina’s government said it had no official record of his entry.
Brazil’s Federal Police were examining border crossings and attempting to establish his whereabouts. Agência Brasil reported suspicions that he used an identity document to cross into Argentina before a planned executive-jet journey to the United States. That account remained unconfirmed.
Reuters subsequently cited two sources saying Bolsonaro had left for the United States. Nevertheless, the absence of a publicly confirmed itinerary means the alleged Argentine route should not be stated as established fact.
Financial Investigations Add to Political Uncertainty
The Wall Street Journal reported that the Supreme Court was examining alleged misconduct connected with online gambling and fundraising for a film about Bolsonaro’s father, former president Jair Bolsonaro. These accusations have not been established as criminal findings.

Separately, authorities ordered an investigation into alleged foreign campaign funding and other possible outside interference following the election. That inquiry should not be conflated with the existing financial probes.
What Happens Next?
The immediate question is verification: whether authorities establish Bolsonaro’s location and clarify his compliance with the travel ban. For now, cancelled passports are confirmed; his reported passage through Argentina is not officially confirmed.
