The U.S. State Department has approved a possible military sale of the NASAMS anti-aircraft missile system and related equipment to the Ukrainian government, reported today the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency.
The estimated cost is about $285 million. The Agency for Security and Defense Cooperation provided the necessary certification by notifying the U.S. Congress.
The Government of Ukraine has requested the purchase of a national advanced anti-aircraft missile system NASAMS, which includes:
- one AN/MPQ-64F1 Sentinel radar;
- Fire Distribution Center (FDC);
- Launchers;
- GPS receivers;
- tool kits;
- prime movers;
- technical support from the U.S. government and contractors.
“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by enhancing the security of the partner country, which is a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe,” said the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency in its press release.

The Agency then added that Ukraine is in need of increasing its capabilities to defend against Russian missile strikes and aviation. The acquisition and effective deployment of this capability is expected to enhance Ukraine’s ability to defend its people and critical national infrastructure.
NASAMS air defense system
NASAMS is a mobile anti-aircraft missile system that can fire 72 missiles in 12 seconds. It is used to shoot down aircraft, helicopters and cruise missiles within a radius of up to 40 km.
The Ukrainian military received the NASAMS anti-aircraft missile system in November 2022. For five months, anti-aircraft gunners destroyed more than a hundred Russian missiles and drones with the help of the complex.
